About

So . . . what are velassi?

Velassi (in the real world) originated as a need to create a new "species" of vampire that were all male and could produce babies.

Why?

Because I needed to have an excuse for Shido from the anime series "Nightwalker" to get knocked up.

Like boys having babies ever really needs a good excuse anyway ~.^

Velassi (in the fictional sense) are a humanoid race that are a precursor to vampires. They are all male physically but mentally they divide themselves into two sexes; the sires, or seed producing gender, and fathers, the baby carrying gender. This does not mean that a sire cannot carry a child (though it is very difficult for them to do so) or that a father cannot sire a child (not hard for them at all) it's just that they prefer not to.

It is unknown if the velassi are an off-shoot of the human race or a different species that developed to better match (and thus blend in) with their chosen prey. Their bite and blood can change humans into vampires but one must be born from two velassi parents to be a velassi. They are armed with fangs and strong nails as well as superior strength and speed. They can form a weapon from their blood (sword, staff, etc) and can fly. Some velassi can cloud the mind of others while some can manipulate their bodies. Each velassi has his own strengths and weaknesses.

The velassi have strengths their vampire by-products do not. They can move about during the day, though direct light will burn them. Holy objects do not burn them nor do they fear the word of God. Blood calls strongly to them but unless they are gravely wounded or truly starving it does not drive them into such a frenzy as it does vampires. They have the bond of family and race that the vampires also do not possess.

And yet they have a far greater weakness too.

Their race always in danger of faltering and going extinct, the velassi must live in secrecy. Their name is never muttered into the open where non-velassi ears might hear.  A father, grown heavy with blessed child for a year and a half is an easy target for any who might see him as a threat . . . or a novelty. A sire turned feral as he hunts for his mate and prowls the nearby lands to protect his family can be seen as a dangerous threat to neighboring humans or nearby vampire court fearing one of their own has given himself over to the inner Beast. The beloved child who has two centuries of child-like weaknesses is in constant danger of both human, vampire, or other beast that might roam the world with him.

But the velassi have developed ways to protect both themselves and the rare child that fate might grant them. Their determination to survive and flourish as they did in the past is great and though their name is never whispered they are the true predators of the night.
